Match report
The United States crashed to a 3-1 defeat against Poland but scraped into the World Cup second round after South Korea's upset of Portugal. The Americans had looked to be tumbling out of the tournament after two goals in the first five minutes from Emmanuel Olisadebe and Pawel Kryszalowicz and a second-half strike by Marcin Zewlakow put Poland 3-0 up. An 81st minute goal by Landon Donovan was a consolation strike for the Americans who never looked like saving the game against a Polish side who had already been eliminated. But Korea's remarkable 1-0 win over Portugal in Incheon meant the Americans sneaked into a second round meeting with CONCACAF rivals Mexico. The South Koreans face Italy. Relieved US skipper Claudio Reyna admitted his team owed 'a big thank you' to the Koreans for pulling off their shock win over the Portuguese.
"We're through to the second round because of what they did. We owe them a big thank you - we're just happy to be through," the Sunderland midfielder said.
"The way we lost tonight we're not going to be celebrating. But a lot of teams got through to the second round thanks to a bit of luck - look at Italy," Reyna said.
"Only 16 teams made it through to the second round and we're one of them. That's all that matters," he added. Earlier, Poland's opening goal came from a corner. Olisadebe attempted a header and when his effort was half-blocked the Nigerian-born striker bludgeoned a half-volley high into the net past keeper Brad Friedel. Within seconds the United States had gone sweeping up the pitch and had the ball in the Polish net, only for Donovan's header to be ruled out for a shove on Arkadiusz Glowacki. As the Americans protested, Poland poured forward and scored their second. Jacek Krzynowek broke down the left flank and crossed for Kryszalowicz, who swept in a firm, low shot past Friedel. Brian McBride had a free header comfortably saved by Majdan as the Americans desperately sought a way back into the match. But although the United States enjoyed plenty of play in Polish territory, it was the Europeans who came closest to scoring a third goal. Kryszalowicz went on a magical run down the Americans' vulnerable left flank, leaving a trail of defenders in his wake before squaring to Jacek Krzynowek. Krzynowek's shot was brilliantly saved by Brad Friedel who then blocked Maciej Kozminski's follow-up with his legs, touching the ball onto the inside of the post as the Americans escaped. On the stroke of half-time Krzynowek saw a rasping 25-yard drive acrobatically parried away by Friedel. But Poland wrapped the game up on 65 minutes. A cross from the left was perfectly met by the head of substitute Zewlakow, who stole in behind team-mate Olisadebe to nod home. Mathis went close to pulling a goal back for the Americans a minute later, but his delicate chip glided just over the bar. The scoreline could have been worse for the United States had Friedel not come to the rescue 15 minutes from time, saving a Zurawski penalty awarded to the Poles after Tony Sanneh had brought down Kryszalowicz. To their credit the Americans refused to roll over, and 10 minutes from time Mathis again almost got on the scoresheet with a shot that hit the post. American persistence paid off on 81 minutes however. A flick on by Mathis after good work by Cobi Jones saw Donovan finish with aplomb.
