Match report
Turkey again let a lead slip to undermine their chances of advancing in their first World Cup finals in 48 years as Costa Rica nabbed a late equaliser in their Group C match. The Turks, who lost 2-1 to Brazil in a stormy opening match after leading in the first half, again dropped maximum points when substitute Winston Parks found the net after a goalmouth scramble four minutes from time. Costa Rica, bidding to emulate their second-round showing in their first World Cup at Italia 90, moved into second place in the group on four points with Turkey trailling in third spot on one point. Four-times World Cup champions Brazil have already clinched second-round passage with six points from two Group C games. Should Costa Rica draw with Brazil in the final game of the group in Suwon on Thursday they will go through to the second phase. Turkey must beat China in Seoul on the same day to have any chance of progressing and hope the central Americans lose. Turkey, who controlled play for much of the opening half, looked to have clinched three vital points when Inter Milan midfielder Emre Belozoglu scored in the 56th minute. Hasan Sas played in Emre and he beat off Gilberto Martinez's tackle and scored at his second attempt. But again the Turks could not hold on to their lead and they were shattered when Parks, who came on as a substitute nine minutes earlier, drilled home after Manchester City striker Paolo Wanchope won a header to ignite a mad goalmouth scramble.
"My team played a beautiful game tonight with so much power and aggression and I am very proud of my team," said Costa Rican coach Alexandre Guimaraes.
"We played with plenty of character against Turkey and we played very hard.
"Every player wants to play Brazil at a World Cup and now we have four points we are in a good position and we are going to do our best to get another point to reach the next round."/p
The Costa Ricans, cheered on by their colourful, drum-banging fans, went desperately close to winning the match in the final minute when Parks was clear on goal after a counter-attack only to find the side-netting from a sharp angle. Turkey again closed a match in high drama when goalscorer Emre almost ignited a sideline brawl when he chased to retrieve the ball that sent into the Costa Rican dugout with minutes later. One of the Costa Rican coaching staff caught the ball and Emre shoved him to the ground in a rage to get the ball and quickly restart play. Both squads began shoving each other in an ugly-looking incident with the Benin referee Coffi Codija and his assistants struggling to maintain control. Codija booked Emre when order was restored. In their opening game, Hakan Unsal, the Galatasaray left midfielder and Aston Villa stopper Ozalan Alpay, were sent off in a furious finish against Brazil. The Brazilians enraged the Turks when they won with a disputed late penalty.
"We are back at the World Cup after 48 years and we scored the first goal against Brazil and we got our first point against Costa Rica and we are confident that we are going to beat China and wait for the right result for us and we can go through," said Turkey coach Senol Gunes.
Gunes replaced his skipper and star striker Hakan Sukur with 15 minutes to get a fresh forward on to the field and surprisingly took off his outstanding young midfielder Yildiray Basturk with 11 minutes left.
